Heights Mercantile Site Prep Started

Finally, another shopping area coming to the Heights!
Ground work has started on a cool shopping experience coming to the Heights: Heights Mercantile, touted as the anti mall. More than a dozen unique shops (no chain crap), 4 chef-driven restaurants and creative office space.

The best part is they are taking existing structures and working around them for a unique indoor/outdoor experience.
This 40,000 SF of shopping straddles E 7th St, between Yale and Heights Blvd. This area was a scruffy part of the Heights with a mix of little commercial places, odd parking spaces and giant electric lines. They are taking an ugly little pocket and turning it into an attraction to the Heights. They should be applauded for their vision.

The renderings are from their website www.heightsmercantile.com. The photo of the construction site I took today

A quote from their website why they are building here:
“Why the Heights? The Heights is the unmistakable center of Houston’s urban renaissance. It is five minutes west of Downtown Houston and ten minutes east of the Galleria. The Heights is home to a multitude of nationally recognized chefs, a buzzing art scene, the fastest appreciating residential submarket in all of Houston and it is within a ten minute drive from over 500,000 of the most innovative Houstonians.”

Without a doubt, this will be hugely popular. The Heights has become a premier area for real estate, dining, arts, etc. We lack shopping though. It will be within walking distance of new high end apartments too.
